Yonemoto Family at the santa anita assembly center
The Yonemoto family was first relocated to the Santa Anita Assembly Center located at the Santa Anita Racetrack, approximately 18 miles east of Los Angeles. The Santa Anita Assembly Center was occupied from March 27 until October 27, 1942, a total of 215 days. It was the largest and the longest-occupied of the assembly camps. Its peak population was 18,719, almost half of whom (8,500) lived in converted horse stalls at the racetrack. Construction to convert the racetrack into an assembly camp was started on March 20, 1942. The Army engineers renovated the stable area and added some 500 barracks in the parking lot
Evacuees were told to bring sufficient blankets, bed linen and towels; toilet articles, soap, comb and mirror; adequate clothing; knives, forks, spoons, plates, bowls, cups; other small incidental property which can be carried easily. .
The Yonemoto and Udo families arrived on May 27, 1942. They were assigned adjoining stalls, 2-62-23 and 2-26-22, possibly previously occupied by thoroughbreds. Still unknown is their departure date, but the family arrived at Heart Mountain, Wyoming on September 13, 1942. According to the Pacemaker, the official publication of the Santa Anita Assembly Center, 4,500 former "Santa Clarans" and "Angelenos" departed for Heart Mountain between August 30 and September 15, 1942.
